The B Corp movement is a global movement of People Using Business as a Force for Good®
Together, we are shifting our economic system from profiting only the few to benefitting all, from concentrating wealth and power to ensuring equity, from extraction to regeneration, and from prioritizing individualism to embracing interdependence.
Our essence
We are interdependent. But, in our current economic system, this is often forgotten. Short-term gains are prioritized over long-term value, profits over people and the planet, creating inequality, extraction, and degradation.
B Lab ™ and Sistema B™ believe that a different kind of economy is not only possible, but necessary — and that business can lead the way.
Since 2006, we’ve been advancing this work around the world by certifying B Corporations: companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. B Corps are also legally committed to bringing benefit not just to shareholders, but all business stakeholders — workers, customers, communities, and the environment.
The B Corp movement is here to change our economic system— and to do so we have to change the rules of the game. We create standards, policies, tools, and programs that shift the behavior, culture, and structure of capitalism. We mobilize the B Corp community towards collective action to address society’s most critical challenges. And we’re doing it all to realize our vision of an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy that works for everyone.

How was the B Corp movement founded?
B Lab was founded in 2006 by three college friends committed to driving progress toward an economic system that works for all people and the planet. The three of them —Andrew Kassoy, Bart Houlahan y Jay Coen Gilbertbelieved there was a better way to do business: better for workers, better for communities, and better for the planet.
Their collective experience as entrepreneurs, operators, and investors had shown them that business was responsible for many of the social and environmental problems we face — but that it also has a unique opportunity to address these same challenges at scale.
Building a community for change
B Lab aimed to build and serve a global movement of entrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, and consumers with one unifying goal: to redefine business success.
That vision began with the recognition that we needed a clear definition of a good company, as well as a community of leaders who could serve as credible examples of that definition. These companies were the first of the now global community of Certified B Corporations: companies meeting high standards of overall social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose.

Growing our Global Network
Andrew, Bart, and Jay founded B Lab in the United States, but achieving systems change would require a much broader and wider-reaching community of leaders. Today, our global network of B Lab and Sistema B organizations are working together, with many other stakeholders, to achieve our vision: a global movement with local relevance and execution. To do so requires that we act with the understanding that we are each dependent upon one another and thus responsible for each other and future generations.
Sistema B was founded in 2012, B Lab’s partner in Latin America, and was the first partner outside of the United States. 2013 saw B Lab Australia & Aotearoa New Zealand and B Lab Europe founded, followed by B Lab UK two years later. The next decade marked growth across new continents with B Lab Africa, B Lab Taiwan, B Market Builder Japan, and B Market Builder Southeast Asia all founded before 2018, and by 2022 we welcomed B Lab Korea, B Lab Hong Kong & Macau, B Market Builder China and B Lab Singapore to our interdependent global network.
B Global Network
All under the B Corp brand, the Global B Network— B Lab Global and Global Partners, including Sistema B in Latin America and the Caribbean —we comprise a unified group of global, regional and national organizations spanning six continents. Our international network leads systemic change to support our collective vision of an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy.
